Notes

Another week has gone by and the days are all blending into each other. Every day is a visit to the hospital to deliver his mother’s milk while also spending the mornings giving kangaroo care. The afternoons have been spent preparing the nursery, while the nights of uninterrupted sleep are a distant past as we both get up to express, clean, and sterilise. If I’m feeling tired, I think my wife feels it more. But y’know what? It’s a blessing that we get to do this, and yes, while our previous lives will never be the same, it’s also about looking forward as we inadvertently walk into the future.

The listening week has been interesting with a welcome relook into the realm of contemporary jazz. Yussef Dayes and his frequent collaborators make their appearances again, but it is artists like daoud and Jessica Myra that stand out to me with their expressive horn arrangements. loulou & the loulous especially with its aching tenor sax parts yearning for something sweeping across the sky while a river of brisk drumming shuffles in the undercurrent.

The next half of the playlist starts with Flotando by Cherry Chola and Chico Sonido. It was the thumbnail art and artist name that caught my attention as it stood recommended on my Spotify dashboard. Was this going to be another discovery like AKRILLA? Click play. No, it doesn’t sound like AKRILLA, but it’s got a certain eccentric energy that also doesn’t mind sounding pop or delivered bubblegum. Somewhat saccharine but with a side of vitriol. Interesting, I like it. And before you know it, a few more other recommendations in similar vein start playing. I guess this is where the weird pop makes its appearance on my listening journey.

Eugene My Brother is just the sort of spoken word song that pulls you in with instrumentation not getting in the way, wheras I’m Not In Pain might be over instrumentation, but in a good way. Manic string arrangements dominate the song without much need for the typical band instruments for an indie folk rock song.

We then go into a mix of post punk synth wave alt rock blends. Everything is slightly familiar and slightly exciting, but if anything, all the arrangements are daring and eager to either make a mark or express themselves unabashedly. Light Over There by RIP Magic is one such example with its lofi bedroom production sensibilities, while Faulty by Boy Harsher takes the simplicity of their synth pop and turns it into pure expression, both music and vocals following an eight note arpeggio pattern that really really draws you in.

There’s some dirty tones in the next few songs which help spice things up, but you probably get a sense of where the mix is going in that it doesn’t care that none of the arrangements make a lot of sense except that its just pure catharsis and expression. Dissonance is melody, and melody is accent. Listen to Lady Rustfor such an idea.

It seems right to end on Return to Dust and Alluvial Fan by Frankie Rose and Dummy respectively. One last hurrah with a synth-y number to accent the journey so far, before ending on a digestif of pure bedroom indie production vibes, dreamy, flowing, and ultimately drifting to sleep or dawn.

I can’t tell because I’m really tired.
